I will never stop talking about fridging. For those who don’t know fridging is a term that was coined by Gail Simone to describe a very upsetting and violent phenomenon in comics. Comic books often use violent, shock factor deaths. The problem however lies with when these shock factor deaths are sexualized. In addition these types of deaths only really ever happen to nameless women who aren’t given personalities. This happens in order to jumpstart a (male) characters story. Today we are talking about the fridging of Maria Hill.
Maria Hill was really nothing more than filler in the MCU. She was there for plot reasons but we didn’t know anything about her. No personal details, no character history. That is strike 1. She “appeared” in the MCU’s latest atrocity Secret Invasion solely for the purpose of being killed. To then jumpstart Fury’s journey through the show. That’s strike 2. And then we really never mentioned her again. That is strike 3. Maria Hill was in fact fridged and that happened this year…2023 so I am pretty angry about it. So the next time some comic book dude bro wants to talk about celebrating the victories and how far we’ve come you can go ahead and tell him to shove it. Because it happened in both comics with Kamala Khan and on screen with Maria Hill this year. We’ve moved past nothing.
