Civil War Review

So when I saw the trailer for Civil War I knew that this movie was going to be weird at best, terrible if we’re being realistic. The casting was strong but as we know that is nowhere near enough to make a good movie. But I love A24 and I have faith so here we are. I will say that at no point in its marketing was I excited about this film. And as far as I know most people found it to be very underwhelming.

So Civil War really was just about journalists…but not in any way that actually mattered. I kept wanting there to be more. More commentary about how journalists influence war, society, culture. Maybe some actual commentary on how oppressive governments hate the news media and attempt to suppress free press. Perhaps even some commentary on how civil wars start. But there was absolutely none of that. What could have been a really great satire was shallow at best. I am really tired of filmmakers attaching the term satire to their very mediocre, shallow commentaries. Overall I think it was a 5/10 at best. I hate movies with wasted potential. The shell of the film was good but there was just no actual meat to it. What could have been a really great satire was simply a waste of time. And perhaps that is worse then if the film was just actually bad all the way through. I think it highlighted some things really well. It did a great job of emotionally conveying its basic thought. But that basic thought was never expanded upon.
