Season 4 of 9-1-1 seemed to do slightly better at the actual storylines. They were definitely still ridiculous but there was no random intense arc in the middle of the season. That said the end of the season drama felt rushed and incomplete. We are starting season 5 with 9-1-1 on the fritz. Cell phone providers are apparently sending random calls and sending random alerts. This obviously starts the season off in an exciting way for our favorite first responders. I have kind of resigned myself to the fact that the writing of this show is not going to be good. The dialogue is fine but the actual plot points and cases are batshit crazy and not in a justifiable way. At least with Grey’s Anatomy there is an understanding that it is a medical soap opera so obviously things are going to be dramatic and unrealistic but on 9-1-1 some the acting leans into soap opera territory without the plotline or direction to support it and it just makes it bad. Evan Buckley is just the cutest boy and I care about his character a lot but dear lord his actor is terrible. Seriously not good. He’s breathy and his delivery is so intense no matter what the situation is. I think have actors like Angela Bassett and Jennifer Love Hewitt made the writers a little too big for their britches and now they have really leaned into these terrible storylines knowing that these ladies can make it work no matter what.

Okay season 5 was the first season where the finale felt like an appropriate finale and not a rushed ending. The last 2 episodes were still really intense but then the final episode actually feels like it closes all the loose ends instead of shoehorning in some random half-assed drama for no reason. Eddie still isn’t back at the 118 and is still working through some things and Chim and Maddy are still apart, but it is looking like they are going to get back together which makes me very happy, and my poor Buck broke up with Taylor.
