From the very second God of War Laufey was announced the internet was split. There was the expected reaction; Incel internet men took to their keyboards to let everyone know just how long it’s been since a woman has even looked at them. Already hating the game, simply because it was centered on a woman. And then there was the much more important group, women. The women that were fired up to try a franchise they’ve never played, the women that were inspired to pick up a video game at all, for the first time ever. The women who play cozy games and were so excited to step out of their comfort zone and try something new (me). We were all just happy to see a woman have an entire playable story built around her.
The beautiful thing is that it fits right into the existent franchise. Because the whole existent story is already built around her. My husband has played the existent God of War games. I have watched occasionally but I was never really paying attention. After God of War Laufey was announced I was so excited that this could be the perfect game to share with my husband. It’s already a franchise he likes and it’s something I’m excited about. So we talked about the new game and I wanted to know the background. He started a new playthrough of the first God of War (not the first first, the Norse first…) I am watching him play so I can get the story, it’s super awesome. It’s like I’m watching a movie and I get to yell at the characters cause it’s my husband.
The game starts with Kratos and Atreus getting set to light Laufey’s funeral pyre. Their journey as a father and son is based around their mutual grief and quest to honor her. She is the emotional motivation of the first game. So her getting a story centered around an alive her is not out of left field.
Well the new game got its moment at SDCC this year.
The Cast of God of War Laufey
The panel kicked off with a look at the game’s trailer and holy crap the trailer looks so fucking good I think I really started crying. Within the first five minutes of the panel Cor Balrog revealed that they are in fact working on the next Kratos game. And by the sounds of it Laufey is going to set up the future of the franchise. If you love God of War don’t worry, the creative team is thinking long term.
The panel consisted of Ariel Lawrence, God of War’s Laufey’s game director. And the incredible main cast of the game Deborah Ann Woll (Laufey), Christopher Judge (Kratos), Perlina Lau (Rue) and Jack Quaid (Phranque).
I actually couldn’t love this cast any more. Everyone is incredible and all of their casting stories are actually so lovely. They are such good speakers – -and I know that feels obvious but a lot of actors are actually not great at panels, I’ve seen it a lot. But they were all so entertaining and genuine.
So excited for Jack Quaid! I love him so much!!!
I love when talented people are genuine fans of things, and then they get to be involved in that thing. Yes I am talking about Tom Holland as Spiderman, I’m talking about the best Doctor’s on Doctor Who…Fans care – that’s the important part. Jack Quaid geeking out about being on this cast is awesome. I love this for him, he deserves success.
God Deborah is so beautiful, she does look like a goddess. Honestly she’s so gorgeous.
Deborah Identifies her character as a reluctant hero. A person just wanting to get back to her family but won’t let bad things happen on her way there.
“All the things being done in this game are going to expand into something amazing” -Cory Barlog
In addition to seeing some exclusive new footage of the game that is unshareable for obvious reasons, we also found out that Laufey will be joining the God of War line up on February 16th 2027.
