Episode 3 of Invincible season 2 gives us a slight change of scenery. We spend very little time on earth and more time exploring some things that were set up in season 1. Our friend Allen the alien is back to a disappointing end. The time we do spend on earth is spent dealing with the grief and guilt that comes with being a superhero. Or a superhero’s spouse, as is the case with Debbie Grayson.
Debbie Grayson seems to be a catalyst for all of the internal emotional development this season. Though Mark has his own stuff going on, Debbie is really isolated. With Mark at college, she really doesn’t have anyone. And it seems like every time she tries to connect with someone it blows up. I really love that they are showing us the reality of being a superhero spouse. Too often the wives and girlfriends of superheroes are nothing more then that. But in Debbie we get a whole person. We get to see a wife that is devastated by what her husband really thought of her, she is a concerned mother of a superhero. She is a struggling woman who is trying to find her own identity in the wake of her marriage. I love Debbie’s character (and not only because she is voiced by Christina Yang).
