Superman vs The Amazing Spiderman

Everyone loves a good comic book crossover. But even comic fans aren’t aware of all the crossovers there have been. Not only between Marvel and DC but between the major two and some really fun and seemingly random characters. Well we are going to talk about all of them eventually, but let’s start at the beginning with Superman vs The Amazing Spiderman 1976. This was Marvel and DCs first superhero crossover, though they had collaborated before on MGMs Wonderful Wizard of Oz project. The creators of this crossover issue; Gerry Conway and Ross Andru had worked on Superman and Spider-Man in their individual solo titles. This story also features the title characters iconic villains; Doc Ock and Lex Luthor as well as their girlfriends; Mary Jane Watson and Lois Lane.

Though considered non-canonical because of the impossible nature of reconciling why the two hadn’t run into each other before, the narrative blended the two heroes together nicely. Other outside the main timeline comics have also referenced this storyline a few times. The crossover was well received enough for it to get a sequel in the 80s (which was really the height of crossovers). Superman and Spider-Man actually compliment each other quite well and Superman vs The Amazing Spiderman was a great jumping off point for all of the future crossover events to come.
